Exploring Oshima

exploring oshima

Oshima, a secluded island in the Goto Islands, weaves untouched nature with deep history.
A 20-minute cruise from the port, passing through islands visible from the hotel, takes you across the blue sea.

Once a thriving whaling town, Oshima is now home to about 30 people, where time flows quietly.
The island features volcanic rock formations and crystal-clear waters.

The main attraction is cave exploration.
You’ll visit the serene “Oshima Lava Tunnel”, a natural monument.
With lit candles, you’ll approach the Kannon statue deep in the cave. Every year, the “Kannon Festival” is held to pray for good health and fortune. The statue has been enshrined as the island’s guardian deity for over 150 years.

Enjoy this special experience of connecting with the island’s pulse, unique to Oshima.

Highlights of Oshima

Oshima Lava Tunnel

A lava tunnel designated as a natural monument of Nagasaki Prefecture. Deep inside the cave, a Kannon statue, considered the island’s guardian deity for about 150 years, is enshrined. The Kannon Festival is held annually around February.

Mt. Hosogadake

The lowest mountain in Nagasaki Prefecture. More than half of the mountain has been eroded by the sea, revealing its interior. You can observe the beautifully layered volcanic deposits.
*At the fork in the road leading to Mt. Hosogadake, take the left path.

Oshima Shrine

Located near the port, this charming shrine coexists with nature. Part of its torii gate is damaged due to typhoons and other factors.

Cat Island

Oshima has a population of about 30 people. According to residents, there are more than twice as many cats as people. The cats are very friendly, and their relaxed demeanor is endearing.

Magnificent Nature

The island’s unique topography is a result of volcanic eruptions. The lush greenery makes you want to take deep breaths. In this season, the Kooni Lily, a summer flower of Goto with vibrant orange petals and black spots, is in full bloom.
